Short Sunderland
The Sunderland was Britain's main airborne defence against German U-boats in World War II.
While large aircraft, they were skilfully operated by their crews. Apart
from sinking many U-boats, their operations in the Bay of Biscay forced the U-boats to remain
submerged in the early stage of their departure for the Atlantic shipping lanes,
effectively shortening their range and so reducing their threat.
The Museum has a nose turret from a Sunderland. This could be slid back into the nose
section to give a crew member access to mooring facilities.
