*Capt. Lancaster bought the "Southern Cross Minor" a
single engine Avro Avian, formerly owned by Charles Kingsford Smith.
He set out in April 1933 in a bid to break Amy Johnson's London-Cape Town solo record. Flying
into the Sahara against head winds he vanished.
29 years later in 1962, a French camel patrol found the aircraft with the
mummified body of Capt. Lancaster beside it. He had died of thirst.
