Misunderstood: A Pulse-check On The Perceptions Of Australian Veterans

Most Australians can’t define a veteran. That needs to change.

raafa’s inaugural report, Misunderstood: A Public Pulse Check into Perceptions of Australian Veterans, exposes a striking reality: Almost 90% of Australians admit uncertainty when asked to define who a veteran is.

And of those who are confident? Nearly half still get it wrong.

This isn’t just a case of semantics — it’s a national issue. These misconceptions are leading to veterans being underserved, undervalued, and, too often, unseen.

raafa commissioned this landmark study with YouGov Australia to better understand how the public perceives veterans and where those perceptions fall short. The results are clear: Australians support their veterans, but don’t fully understand who they are, what they’ve done, or what they need.
